Skinning/Alt Skiing

Skinning / Alpine Touring (AT Skiing)
Mixing the serenity of the slopes with an epic workout, skinning—also known as alpine touring—has become one of the fastest-growing trends in skiing. It combines the endurance and challenge of uphill travel with the exhilaration of downhill skiing, offering a full-body adventure on snow.

What Is Skinning?
Skinning is the practice of climbing up a mountain on skis equipped with “skins”—a special fabric strip that attaches to the base of the ski. The material grips the snow, allowing the skier to move uphill without sliding backward, while bindings with a free-heel mode make striding possible. Once at the top, the skins are removed, the bindings are locked into downhill mode, and the skis transform back into regular alpine gear, ready for the descent.

Why Try It?

  • Fitness & Endurance: It’s one of the best winter workouts, building strength, stamina, and cardiovascular fitness.
  • Connection with Nature: Skinning takes you away from the crowds, letting you enjoy the quiet beauty of the mountain.
  • Adventure & Versatility: From early-morning laps before the lifts open to exploring untouched terrain, skinning opens up new ways to experience skiing.

Equipment Needed:

  • Alpine touring skis or a binding system compatible with skins
  • Climbing skins (nylon, mohair, or blended materials)
  • Adjustable touring boots and poles
  • Proper layers and safety gear

Whether you’re looking for a new fitness challenge, a peaceful way to experience the mountain, or simply a fresh twist on skiing, skinning blends the best of uphill effort with downhill reward.
